Hi, All,
For English prep paper, I wrote this. Tell me what you think...
Much Love to Y'all and God Bless,
Mel
XOX
Prompt: Write about someone who has made an important difference in your life.
I stood, fists clinched, at the starting line.
"Come on, Mel, you did this at Camp Life; you can do it again," I thought to myself. Many memories flew through my mind. In the past my sight loss had caused many fears. One of those fears was of sports. For one thing I've never really been good at them in the first place, no matter how hard I've tried. I think, for example, that not being able to see so well intimidated me while running, and it slowed me down. The reason is, when I was little, at recess I would just be running and having a good old time and BOOM! I'd bump smack into a streetlight pole or tree, I'd fall in a ditch, or I'd run into someone, most likely a little kid, and I would feel awful. This changed when I went to Camp Life, a summer camp organized as a thesis for and by Vickie Fedder. Our coach was Cody Colchado. He was visually impaired, and he had competed and been a champion in some events in the paralympics. He was amazing! I remember when he walked on a tipped over phone pole backwards with his eyes closed. I would have been much too afraid to do anything like that. I remember when he taught me how to throw a shot put hand over hand. He applauded me even when my throws were crooked or when I forgot a step. I remember when I had to run toward a beeping target, blindfolded, while I was learning some basic concepts of beep baseball.
"Go for it; don't be afraid!" he said while I waited my turn fearfully. When it came, I rocketed across the gym (about 100 feet) in 8.85 seconds, nearly knocking over Jeff who was holding the beeper. Everyone applauded. I actually felt like I had done something right! I remember when I would be running on the track. I could hear Coach Cody yelling: "Go, go, go, go!" When I reached the finish line, everyone would cheer. This encouraged me one day during practice, especially after my friend Eugene lost a bet that he could beat me twice in a row. I beat HIM twice in a row! Ha! How about that?! Finally, after one week of training, all the campers were to compete against each other. I won gold metals for the 50 meter dash, the 100 meter dash, the shot put, and the running long jump. Also, my goal ball team, The Champions, which consisted of Denise, Fallon, Kristi, and me won second place in the tournament. At the award ceremony, Coach Cody showed us some of the metals he had won in the paralympics. When I received my first gold, I almost cried because it looked EXACTLY like his! It had the same acronym USABA (USA Blind Athletes) in Braille on it. It meant a lot to me. It was time to go home. I begged my dad to let me say goodbye to Coach Cody. He gave me the biggest, warmest hug and said: "You wanna know what I want you to do? Not only do I want you to keep training, but keep getting good grades in school and always remember that Jesus loves you." Was he… crying…?! Yes, Sir, he most certainly was! "I'm so proud of you! I love you very much. Take care, OK?" He kissed me on my left cheek.
"OK. You too," I said.
"God bless you." Coach Cody believed in me when I couldn't and didn't believe in myself…
"On your mark!…" the person with the gun and loud speaker yelled. I came back to reality. My hands had grown slightly numb from clinching my fists so tightly. I had loosened my grip a little. I shook them and gripped again. My blood stirred like a hurricane. There was still a hint of that old fear of falling on my face or tripping on my shoelaces. No, that was impossible; I had made ABSOLUTELY sure they were tied. I sighed and smiled.
"Mel, you're gonna do just fine…"
"Get set!…" I looked around and listened as if Coach Cody would be there cheering me on. POW! And there I went, leaving my other two fellow competitors in my dust. I flew like never before, and… I passed the finish line?! What?! That was it?! Had I won?! Had I really won?! Again?! No way! 17.49 seconds?! I walked around aimlessly to keep from passing out or something. My friend Janelle who happened to be helping out came to get me. As we walked off arm in arm toward the award platform, I could hear random people shouting random things at me. I wasn't really paying attention; I was still shocked that I actually won!…
